The Al-Hakim Mosque underwent renovation in the 1970s, with contributions from the Dawoodi Bohra community, whose roots can be traced back to the Fatimid era. The neighborhood where the mosque is located has undergone two refurbishment projects, the first of which was completed around 40 years ago. Notably, Prime Minister Modi hails from the state of Gujarat in India, which is home to a substantial Dawoodi Bohra population. The community migrated to India in the 11th century and later established their main concentration in Gujarat after relocating from Yemen in 1539.

Modi has consistently acknowledged the support of the Dawoodi Bohra community, particularly during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. In 2011, he invited the Bohra community to join him in celebrating the 100th birthday of Syedna Burhanuddin. When Burhanuddin passed away in 2014, the prime minister traveled to Mumbai to pay his respects and developed a relationship with Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the current leader and successor of the community. In 2021, during his visit to Bangladesh, PM Modi met with a delegation from the Bohra community. Additionally, the Bohra community hosted the Ashara Mubaraka event, also known as the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (SA), in Indore in 2018.
