How was Gandhi killed? Remembering Mahatma Gandhi in his 75th death anniversary.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse.

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948 by Nathuram Godse, Gandhiji was walking towards the prayer mandap at Birla House in Delhi that’s when 35 year old Godse came in front of him and fired 3 shots from point-blank range that hit Gandhi in the chest, stomach, and groin and within 15 minutes he was dead. On February 10th Judge Atma Charan sentenced Nathuram Godse, Narayan Apte and 5 others to death penalty for the crime they had commited, they had later filed an appeal against the order in the Punjab High Court, which was then known as East Punjab High Court which is located in Shimla. After several proceedings the Governer-General of India rejected their mercy petitions and both Godse and Apte were hanged on November 15, 1949 in Ambala Jail.

On 30th January, 2023 marks the 75th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu offered floral tributes to Gandhiji’s memorial Raj Ghat. 

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also paid homage to Gandhiji.

Gandhiji’s death anniversary is observed as Martyrs’ Day and a 2 minute silence was also observed in his honor. At the Raj Ghat Gandhiji’s favorite devotional songs were played and a gun salute was given as well and school students and several others gathered to pay their homage to Gandhiji at the memorial.
