On early morning of 23 June 2021, an earthquake with magnitude 4.9 has hit near Kohat, Kohāt District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. According to a report by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake has magnitude 4.5. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Kohat located 16 km from the epicenter, and Lachi 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hangu located 45 km from the epicenter, Peshawar 62 km away, Nowshera Cantonment 75 km away, Charsadda 80 km away, Tordher 92 km away, and Mardan 96 km away.
