The locals in the national capital who felt the earthquake tremors in the city in the early hours of Wednesday recounted their experiences of the jolt they faced. Hours after Delhi was hit by a high-intensity earthquake centered in Nepal, Uttarakhand was jolted by an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale in the early hours of Wednesday.
The tremor with its epicenter in Nepal and measuring 6.3 on the Ritcher scale was felt at around 1.57 am in the national capital and nearby areas. There were two earthquakes and one aftershock in Nepal. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR as the second earthquake hit Nepal at 1.57 am.
At least six people were killed and several injured as three tremors in the last 24 hours triggered landslides in various parts of the Doti district, news agency ANI reported. Strong tremors were felt in Delhi and the NCR region waking people out of their sleep at around 2 am.
Speaking to ANI, a passenger at the New Delhi railway station said, "We were getting off an auto when we felt the tremors. The auto driver also got scared, and as I looked around, I could see others felt it too. It stopped soon after."
The people living and working overnight in Noida shared their experiences of the scenario erupting with the sudden strike of the earthquake. Sunny, a working professional, said that once the earthquake was felt, the alarm of the office went off and they immediately ran outside the office.
"The guard rang the alarm once the earthquake came. The company had taken precautions. We all including the managers and HRs had come out of the building. The earthquake was tremendous. We were scared," he said.
The massive shake took lives of six people. The six people belonged to the western district of Doti. Three deceased belonged to the same family. Five other injured people are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Some properties and houses were also damaged in the earthquake.
The first earthquake of magnitude 4.9 hit Nepal at around 8.52pm. The second earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck Nepal at around 1.57am, the tremors of which were felt strongly in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram and even Lucknow. The epicentre of the second earthquake was 90km east-southeast of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand.
