Doctors were left astonished by the discovery of around 62 steels spoons in the stomach of a young man through operation in Muzaffarnagar. 32-year-old Vijay Chauhan confessed of swallowing around these many spoons during his stay in the drug addiction centre within a year.

Vijay Chauhan is a resident of Bopara village of Thana Mansoorpur area. According to reports Vijay’s family which consists of his wife, a 14-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son were deeply upset by his immense addiction to alcohol and charas. Vijay was a farmer by profession who used to waste all his over his addiction so his family sent him to rehabilitation centre located in Shamli last year.

Completing a stay of five years Vijay returned to his home. His nephew Akhil informed about the following events, “Maternal uncle had complained of stomach ache as soon as he returned from the drug de-addiction center. After this we showed him to different doctors in Meerut itself, but did not get relief. Gradually 5-6 months passed. 3-4 days ago Mama started having severe pain in stomach. After this we hurriedly admitted him to Ivan Hospital”.

Dr. Rakesh Khurana, the surgeon of the hospital recommended operating Vijay. Before the operation, Vijay himself revealed about swallowing spoons and proved this point swallowing a spoon before the doctor. However Vijay’s nephew Akhil Chaudhary accused the drug de-addiction centre of forcibly feeding his maternal uncle spoons every day that landed him in this condition.

The surgery was done on 26 September that lasted for two hours. Around 62 steel spoons came out of Vijay’s stomach during the surgery after which Vijay’s condition worsened. So he was shifted to the ICU. The doctors are keeping a watch on Vijay for 24 hours.

CMO Dr. MS Faujdar said “it is a matter of chance that so many pieces of spoon remained in the stomach of a person for so many days. This may be possible if any sharp part of the spoon or whatever metal goes into the stomach is not pricked. However, this is also a subject of research. If the surgeon who performed the operation is saying then this can be accepted. However, if so many pieces of steel are in the stomach, then there is a danger of getting deep wounds inside. The matter will be investigated”.
