Students of Chandigarh University in Mohali began mass protest this Saturday midnight after they discovered MMS of around 60 students taking bath gone viral in social media. After authority showed ignorance to the complaints of the victims enraged students came together to seek justice.
A female student of MBA first year was caught red handed while she was making videos of another student while she was taking bath. Photos show that there is no roof in the girl bathroom which helped the guilty to shoot by standing on a stool through the uncovered roof. Then she sent the MMS to a man living in Shimla who uploaded the MMS in social media. The accused woman student was also demanding money from the victims in exchange of not leaking their videos.
Few protesting students mentioned about suicide attempts by some girl students. However Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vivek Soni considered it as a Rumohr and denied any instance of self-harm including suicide attempt by any student. Only one female student was taken to the hospital who had fainted out of shock and anxiety, he added.
Police reached the spot and arrested the accused. It also arrested the man from Shimla who was leaking the videos. Their mobile phones and electronic devices were seized and sent to the forensic lab for investigation. A case under section 354C concerning to voyeurism under the Indian Penal Code and Section 66E of the Information Technology Act (punishment for violation of privacy) has been registered against the accused at Kharar (Sadar) police station.
Chandigarh University claims “All the rumours of objectionable videos shot of other girl students are totally false and baseless. No videos were found of any student which is objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which was shared by her with her boyfriend”. Police also mentioned about finding only one video of the accused in her phone.
Although the video of the accused confessing her crime had gone viral the University’s attempt to cover up the matter has fuelled the protest. Also the warden is being accused of deleting all the videos from the culprit’s phone to destroy evidence. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann promised strict action against the guilty. “All the culprits involved in this will get the harshest punishment. Victim girls have courage. We all are with you. Act with patience" said Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal.
