'6G will be available in India by 2023-24', Says Telecom Minister

The telecom minister has said that in India 6G services will be available by 2023-24.

In a webinar organized by Financial Times and The Indian Express, Union Minister of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that 6G development has already initiated in the country and it will be rolled out somewhere in the time frame of 2024 or end-2023. 

In a report by The Indian Express, Vaishnaw was quoted as saying, “6G development has already started. That will be seen somewhere in the time frame 2024 or 2023-end. That is the direction in which we are going. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global." 

The Communications Minister also stated that the 5G launch is also on the cards, with the development of a core software for the technology which is scheduled to be finalized by the third quarter of the next year that is 2022. 

About 5G spectrum auctions, Vaishnaw said that TRAI has already started the consultation process, which should end somewhere in February-March next year. The auction process will begin in Q2 2022, he said. Vaishnaw also said that there will be more reforms for the telecom sector to sort out their long-pending legacy issues. 

What is 5G Technology? 

5G is the 5th generation of mobile network following 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G. It is a new global wireless standard. The 5th generation technology offers a new network which is specially designed to virtually connect everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.

According to Qualcomm, "5G wireless technology is meant to deliver higher multi-Gbps peak data speeds, ultra low latency, more reliability, massive network capacity, increased availability, and a more uniform user experience to more users. Higher performance and improved efficiency empower new user experiences and connects new industries."
