Two-time Grand slam champion Garbine Muguruza has got engaged to a fan who had once asked to take a selfie, they had a chance meeting back in 2021. The Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player got engaged to Arthur Borges. She announced her engagement via Instagram through a quote from “Jerry Maguire”.
The tennis player revealed how she met with Borges. She met him when he asked her for a selfie on the streets of New York back in 2021 when she was in the US for the US Open. She stated “my hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk, I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly he turns and says ‘good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘wow, he’s so handsome.” After their first meeting they kept in touch and she was attracted to him because he did not belong from the world of tennis but instead works in fashion. Borges is of mixed decent, he was born in Spain but lived in Finland for most of his life.
The couple got engaged after dating for 2 yrs and she described the proposal as “very romantic”. The couple hasn’t set a wedding date yet but they want to hold the wedding ceremony in Spain, somewhere close to a beach.
Muguruza is a former World no 1 who was ranked in the top 10 as last year, but since has struggled on the court and has taken a hiatus from the sport earlier this year.
